"The Other Side of My Heart"

Music by Alejandro Rutty

Words Compilation and Interviews by Lorena Guillen

The Other Side of My Heart is a musical-visual artwork that engages Latina immigrants in retelling their journeys from their countries of origin to US.

Over various sessions of conversations, I recorded six women from our community sharing and reflecting about their dreams and fears while evaluating the things they gained and lost in their journeys.

This work became a song cycle with music by Alejandro Rutty and lyrics based on the interviews, using some of their exact words and sayings. Rutty and I used fragments of their recorded voices as part of an audio-collage interspersed between each song.

Photographer Felipe Troncoso created a collection of photographs of significant objects for these women and other related topics, which is projected along with the songs when the piece is performed live.

Lorena Guillen explains it: -
