"The Other Side of My Heart"

Music by Alejandro Rutty

Words Compilation and Interviews by Lorena Guillen

The Other Side of My Heart is a musical-visual artwork that engages Latina immigrants in retelling their journeys from their countries of origin to the Triad region in NC (Greensboro, High-Point, Winston-Salem). Over various sessions of recorded conversations with me, six women from our community shared and reflected about their dreams and fears while evaluating the things they gained and lost. This work became a song cycle with music by Alejandro Rutty and lyrics based on the interviews, which I edited from their exact words. Rutty and I used fragments of their recorded voices in the interviews as part of an audio-collage interspersed between each song.
